Hurricane Preparedness Checklist Before Hurricane Florence Arrives
We’re in the midst of hurricane season here in Hampton Roads. And we’re no strangers to the fierce winds, surge waters, or loss of power experienced during these storms. In fact, parts of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina are still recovering from Hurricane Matthew, the last cat 5 hurricane to plow through the coast back in 2016. It’s best to have a plan to stay safe and here’s a brief checklist to ensure your home’s plumbing system is effective during severe weather:
Shut off your main water valve before the storm hits, even if you evacuate. This prevents any contaminated water getting into your plumbing system.
Flooding will most likely occur so check your sump pumps. Does it use batteries? Does it need new batteries? Be sure to check. Also, check for clogs and fill the reservoir with water to ensure it’s working properly.
Flooding can also compromise your home’s water supply, so be certain you are stocked with 3 - 5 days’ worth of drinking water. Fill bathtubs with water and freeze gallon ziplock bags for extra use (bathing, not drinking).
Check your storm drains and remove any debris which could obstruct excess water runoff.
